There are a lot of things to love about Linux. Security…Stability…Cost…Customization…the list could go on forever! There aren’t a lot of people that talk about the look of a Linux desktop though. When you first install your favorite distro, it usually looks a little on the bland side. KDE 4 looks really nice out of the box, but it is still a little boring for my taste. The ability to make your desktop look exactly the way you want it is truly an awesome feature of the Linux platform. My taste tends to lean towards elegant simplicity combined with powerful usability. I wanted to share these screenshots of what a Linux system can look like after a little tweaking and customizing. This system is running Ubuntu. The dock is cairo-dock. Compiz handles the 3D cube desktop.

The last screenshot shows me running a script that I wrote…It’s a bash hacking simulator game. So, don’t worry, I’m not actually trying to break into the NSA’s web server! Please feel free to comment on the screenshots!

I like the simlicity of your desktop. What icon set is that and does cairo-dock use that translucent backgroung by default or was it an add in. I love the way it arches!

Kinda hoping that SOMEDAY, ‘Linux’ might stop trying to be ‘MacOS’ and/or ‘Windows 7′. And no, Gnome has looked like Gnome for years. KDE started taking babysteps, but well, Linux needs a definitive look and feel.

The look-and-feel customisation on linux (specifically Gnome) goes beyond rotating cubes and wobbly windows. Please understand that, otherwise this article is no different that the 20k others on the web labeled “My awesome linux!Windows sucks!!!” and 1000+ youtube videos by linux noobs and “fanboys” who install linux just so that they can show off rotating cubes, and move back saying “linux sucks” once they get bored of it.
Why can’t the desktop customisation be about CUSTOMISING the available gorgeous themes for once. That infact represents the power of linux, everything is “open” and can be edited to make it look exactly the way you want it.Want a light theme with a dark panel? No problem, can be done.Adore the icon set,but want a more “original-looking” firefox icon that was there in the previous iconset? Can be done!
Please make “how to get your default bland linux desktop to look great” to be more than rotating cubes and snazzy fire/water effects.Let it such creative input that actually deals with the finer points, effects that make it look good while doing day-to-day work, without pressing 3 keys at once and going “kazoom!”

Quite a bit of customizing went into these…The post is also going on two years old. I have other posts that are dedicated to conky configuration, custom system fonts, making icons, etc…
